Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (TAQA Assessor Course) qualification is the NVQ Assessor course that allows you to assess in both a classroom and a workplace environment. With this qualification, you can assess any courses you are occupationally competent. The course has replaced the old A1 Assessor qualification and is also known as CAVA or TAQA. The course is intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace such as workshops and classrooms. Coursetopia encourages candidates to submit naturally occurring evidence from their work environment to demonstrate competency against the practical requirements of the course. We welcome other evidence such as prior learning and do not just rely on assignments. This can include schemes of work, assessment reports, course resources and communication records. There are currently four different assessor courses which are aimed at different settings. Please refer to our guide by clicking here. The course has a 84 hours guided learning requirement. You are usually expected to complete this course within 3 to 12 weeks depending on the mode of enrolment you choose.

Course Structure of this CAVA Qualification

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is made up of the following three units:

Unit Title Credits
1 Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment 3
2 Assess occupational competence in the work environment 6
3 Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding 6

What is the role and responsibilities of an assessor?

You can potentially address all learning outcomes and assessment criteria of this course by responding to one question regarding the role and responsibilities of an assessor. An assessor needs to be a role model by demonstrating good practice throughout. An assessor will be expected to work within both internal and external requirements. This includes embracing policies, procedures and regulations. An assessor will be expected to be professional, progressive, reflective, inclusive, fair and to meet the needs of learners. They will be expected to promote the welfare and safeguard their learners.

In order to fully explore the role of an assessor and their responsibilities it is wise to look at it from a number of perspectives. For example, learners will expect an assessor to develop their skills, be knowledgeable, maintain confidentiality, protect them from harm and be approachable. On the other hand, if you are working with younger learners, the parents will expect to be updated about their progress. Your organisation will expect you to be professional, declare any conflict of interest, be a team player, work in line with quality assurance protocols, participate in continuous professional development activities and promote the integrity of the organisation and qualifications. If you are supporting an apprentice, or a funded learner, the funding organisation will expect you to keep timely records of their attendance and progress.

You can go on and on as part of exploring the role of an assessor and their responsibilities from a number of perspectives. What is important is for the assessor to have good subject knowledge and to work within professional boundaries. To conclude, you can also link the assessing role and responsibilities to the assessing cycle which requires the assessor to carry out an initial assessment, plan assessments, assess, provide feedback, review progress and instigate any action plans.

Evidence of practice will however need to be provided in the form of work products, expert witnesses, observations or any other appropriate and suitable method that demonstrates your competency.

How long is this TAQA course?

We are often asked how quick someone can complete this course? This depends on a number of factors which includes your own commitment, the quality of your evidence, time, learning and assessment opportunities and your ability to study at a high level. Candidates joining the course with evidence of prior learning and credits from other qualifications will obviously be able to complete quicker than someone without. If you invest more time on the course such as 15 hours a week then you will most likely complete earlier compared to someone who commits less time. Please bear in mind that you will be required to evidence learning and participate in course activities. This is a regulated qualification that will be quality assured and monitored by awarding bodies and Ofqual. We however expect you to complete the course within 3 to 12 weeks.
